Wow, another station format bites the dust! This huge announcement from WJZW 105.9 follows in the wake of major format changes from WTGB 94.7, which went from pop-rock (The Globe) to classic rock, to FRESH FM in the span of two years, and a shift from 106.7 to strictly sports talk (THE FAN) with the Junkies continuing to broadcast their mishmash of content. AND, when I first started at Wolf Trap, 105.9 was Smooth Jazz. From a PR perspective, this is getting a little crazy as I am continually shifting around on-air interview ops for our artists.
This format looks decent...although I don't listen to much commercial radio. I'd love to see D.C.'s answer to Baltimore's WRNR and WTMD. That's where my loyalty lies.
See WJZW's press release below announcing the shift.
“105.9 THE EDGE” DEBUTS ON THE WASHINGTON DC RADIO DIAL
True Oldies 105.9 changes format and becomes 105.9 THE EDGE.
WASHINGTON, DC (August 26, 2009)--Today at 10 a.m. EST, WJZW-FM will become 105.9 THE EDGE. Replacing True Oldies, 105.9 THE EDGE will debut, giving listeners a new radio station that features one great rock song after another. Running commercial free through Labor Day, 105.9 THE EDGE is today’s “Classic Rock… That Rocks!”
Like the incredibly successful MIX 107.3, 105.9 THE EDGE is built on the same platform as a variety based station, but is specifically designed for men who love to rock. D.C.’s listeners will hear everything from Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones and The Who to AC/DC, classic Van Halen, Alice In Chains and Guns N’ Roses. Plus, they’ll get a more modern feel from Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and U2. This station has energy, attitude, and EDGE!
“Classic Hits stations play older and softer music from the 60s, 70s and early 80s, including artists like the Beach Boys, Billy Joel, Chicago, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel and America. On the other side, Alternative stations tend to play music that is newer and less familiar. 105.9 THE EDGE is a station designed to fit between those two formats and will offer adult men a wide variety of familiar, up tempo Classic Rock along with a wide variety of music from the past twenty years,” said Kenny King, Operations Director of Citadel Broadcasting’s D.C. cluster.
New call letters are pending final approval by the FCC. Listeners can stream 105.9 THE EDGE at http://www.theedge1059.com/. WJZW HD2 will continue to carry Smooth Jazz and is available at http://www.smoothjazz1059.com/. True Oldies will soon be available on a third HD Channel.
